You can successfully login with your username and password. But, after that you experience a blank or black screen. And you have error message, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre title=\"Using RDC on PC\/laptop\" class=\"wp-block-code\"><code lang=\"markdown\" class=\"language-markdown\">Your Remote Desktop Service session has ended, possibly for one of the following reasons:\n\nThe administrator has ended the session.\nAn error occured while the connection was being established.\nA network problem occured.\n\nFor help solving the problem, see \"Remote Desktop\" in help and support.<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>which has no useful information, or this<\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre title=\"Using RD Client for Android\" class=\"wp-block-code\"><code lang=\"markdown\" class=\"language-markdown\">Your session was disconnected\nThe graphics display components in the remote session failed to start up.\nError code: 0x12<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>In my opinion, this issue is most likely due to a problem with Windows RDC application on the host computer. This is because the host computer is still accessible using other remote applications, including Google Remote Desktop and TeamViewer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution 1: Reducing remote quality<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On the client computer, open the Remote Desktop Connection. If you can not find any options (as in Fig 1), click <code>\u25bc show options<\/code>. Then, do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go to the <code>Display<\/code> tab, then:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>under <code>Display configuration<\/code>, use the same resolution as the host computer (if applicable). Otherwise, set a smaller resolution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>disable <code>Use all my monitors for the remote session<\/code> option.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>under <code>Colors<\/code>, select the lower <code>color depth<\/code> (e.g., <code>15 bit<\/code>).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the <code>Experience<\/code> tab, then:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>select the lower <code>connection speed<\/code>, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>disable all of the visual quality (e.g., <code>Desktop composition<\/code> and <code>Visual styles<\/code>).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If necessary, also disable the <code>Persistent bitmap caching<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the <code>Local Resources<\/code> tab, then:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>under <code>Local devices and resources<\/code>, uncheck the <code>Printers<\/code> option.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>[<em>optional<\/em>] under <code>Remote audio<\/code>, click <code>Settings...<\/code>, and disable the audio by selecting <code>Do not play<\/code> and <code>Do not record<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"407\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indowhiz.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Win-RDP-experience-options_compressed.jpg\" alt=\"Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) options.\" class=\"wp-image-6544\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fig 1. Remote Desktop options.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note that this solution has a small chance of solving the issue.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution 2: Reboot host computer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This RDC black screen issue may easily be resolved by restarting the host computer. <strong><em>But, how you do that?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well&#8230; usually, you can still access it by using other remote apps, including Google Remote Desktop and TeamViewer, or even using SSH. Then, after restarting the host computer, you can use Windows RDC again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise, there is no known solution other than to physically restart the host computer. You can ask someone that is physically close to the host or remote computer, if applicable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: Before restarting the host computer, make sure there are no essential applications that may still be running and haven\u2019t been saved.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution 3: Update\/roll back GPU driver on host computer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You can try this solution if you can still access it by using other remote apps or after restarting the host computer.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, on the host computer, you need to open the GPU driver in the device manager, as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>open <code>Control Panel<\/code>, by going to <code>Windows Start menu<\/code>, then type <code>Control Panel<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>change <code>View by<\/code> to <code>Large icons<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>right click on <code>Device Manager<\/code>, then <code>Run as administrator<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>under <code>Display Adapters<\/code>, double-click the main GPU. You can also right-click on it and select <code>Properties<\/code>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, make sure your computer uses the latest version of GPU drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"890\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indowhiz.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/device-manager-GPU-driver-management.jpg\" alt=\"GPU driver management\" class=\"wp-image-8460\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fig 2. GPU driver management.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Otherwise, if you encounter this RDC black screen issue after you update the GPU driver, you can <code>Roll Back<\/code> the GPU Driver to the previous version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution 4: Update Windows or use XDDM display driver<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You can try this solution if you can still access it by using other remote apps or after restarting the host computer.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned in Microsoft&#8217;s update page, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/topic\/august-30-2019-kb4512941-os-build-18362-329-718203aa-33ff-813d-37c9-ed9a2954fa98\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">KB4512941<\/a> may solve the black screen issue in RDC. You can install it in the host computer and restart it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, you may try to force RDC to <a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/all\/windows-10-v1903-black-screen-with-remote-desktop\/23c8a740-0c79-4042-851e-9d98d0efb539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">use XDDM display driver<\/a>. To apply it, in the host computer, do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open <code>Windows Start menu<\/code>, then type <code>gpedit.msc<\/code> and <code>Run as administrator<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Navigate to <code>Local Computer Policy<\/code> -&gt; <code>Computer Configuration<\/code> -&gt; <code>Administrative Templates<\/code> -&gt; <code>Windows Components<\/code> -&gt; <code>Remote Desktop Services<\/code> -&gt; <code>Remote Desktop Session Host<\/code> -&gt; <code>Remote Session Environment<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the policy of &#8220;<code>Use WDDM graphics display driver for Remote Desktop Connections<\/code>&#8221; from &#8220;<code>Not configured<\/code>&#8221; to &#8220;<code>Disabled<\/code>.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Restart the computer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1108\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.indowhiz.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Windows-set-policy-to-force-RDC-to-use-XDDM-display-driver.jpg\" alt=\"Set policy to force use XDDM display driver for Remote Desktop\" class=\"wp-image-8439\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Fig 3. Set policy to force use XDDM display driver for Remote Desktop<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you cannot find this option in the <code>Local Group Policy Editor<\/code>, you can manually add the option to Registry using Command Prompt, as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>on the host computer, open <code>Windows Start menu<\/code>, then type <code>CMD<\/code> and <code>Run as administrator<\/code>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>type <code>REG ADD \"HKLM\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows NT\\Terminal Services\" \/v \"fEnableWddmDriver\" \/t REG_DWORD \/d 0 \/f<\/code> then press enter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prevention<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As far as I know in Windows, RDC is faster and more practical than other remote apps. However, sometimes you may encounter any issues with RDC, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indowhiz.com\/articles\/en\/remote-desktop-protocol-error\/\">protocol error<\/a> and black screen. So, to ensure that you can solve any RDC issues in the future, you need to set up other remote applications in the host computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use another application, such as Google Remote Desktop or TeamViewer. However, you must set it to automatically start when you login or restart your computer. So that you can access it using another remote application, anytime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, if you have problem using RDC, you can connect using other apps you have set up.
